Executive job search used to be simple. Recruiters called you
with offers, previous employers wanted to hire you again, and

learned by successful executive candidates:
1. IN THIS MARKET DON'T EXPECT JOBS TO FIND YOU
A passive job search is a long job search. If you are casually
looking for a new position, you can afford to 'explore'
opportunities and take your time. However, if you are planning a
serious job search campaign, you need to start promoting
yourself actively and make it a decisive priority.
Responding to posted positions, using job boards or mass mailing
your resume are all marginally effective methods. The real job

associations, go to trade shows, or simply call companies and
suggest a personal meeting. If you have something good to offer,
you will be surprised how many of them will be interested.
2. REVAMP YOUR RESUME TO GAIN LEVERAGE
The best career background will be ignored if not properly
promoted. When your resume looks too 'common' (as so many
resumes do), it will not compel employers to hire you and pay
you a high salary. A well-written resume is no longer an option

quickly convey the benefits of hiring you over other similarly
competent candidates. Your resume needs to be market-focused and
go beyond past accomplishments, concentrating on your POTENTIAL.
3. BROADEN YOUR SEARCH AND CONSIDER NEW AVENUES
Opportunities within your industry may be limited. But other
industries may be looking for someone with your skill set. The
services sector, for instance, is bound to
grow and many
companies are looking for new talent.
Smart organizations are realizing that in order to stay
competitive and grow, they need to diversify into new business
areas. As an example, many technology executives have found
gainful positions in the expanding online education sector. If
you can demonstrate that your career background compliments
their goals and objectives, you will be seen as a candidate of
choice.
